Charlotte Clubhouse: Where Mental Wellness Thrives
Our Mission
To facilitate wellness, happiness, a sense of achievement, and a stable quality of life through meaningful work, supportive community, and creative endeavors for individuals impacted by mental illness.
Our Story
What is a clubhouse?
A clubhouse is a community that intentionally and purposefully provides support to those diagnosed with a serious mental illness. Through participation in a clubhouse, people are given the opportunities to rejoin a life with friendships, family, important work, employment, education and to access the services and support needed for an individual in recovery for better mental wellness.

A clubhouse is much more than social service—it is most importantly a community of people working together in a psychosocial rehabilitation setting towards a common goal. The Clubhouse Model complements available psychiatric and medical treatments but focuses less on the clinical side of mental illness, and more on relationships and skill building as critical vehicles for rehabilitation.
Brief History of Charlotte Clubhouse
Charlotte Clubhouse, a member of Clubhouse International, is the first and only facility in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina to apply the standards of the proven Clubhouse Model. Its signature feature—the work-ordered day—enables members with mental illness to regain self-efficacy as they follow a 9-5 schedule, engage in meaningful work, develop relationships, and experience community. Open since October 2022, Charlotte Clubhouse aims to enhance this program by expanding into a full, five-day-a-week schedule in the near future.
How does a clubhouse work?
The daily activity of Charlotte Clubhouse is organized around a structured system known as the work-ordered day. This is an eight-hour period that resembles the business hours of the working community. Participation is voluntary and members decide what tasks they would like to pursue. They work side-by-side with staff to complete daily activities such as planning and preparing lunch, housekeeping, record-keeping, gardening, production of a newsletter, and connecting with the community through frequent workshops.
